CYS Baseball Volunteer Recruitment
The CYS baseball committee is recruiting volunteers to help maintain and advance the quality and
direction of the CYS baseball program. The committee is particularly interested in involving
parents of younger (T-ball/rookie) players to ensure continuity as existing board members’
children graduate out of the CYS program.
The simple reality is that the baseball program will be exactly as good as the parents make it. The
baseball committee currently consists of a handful of involved parents that are responsible for all
decisions affecting uniforms, scheduling, equipment, fund-raising, umpires, rain-outs, field
assignments, try-outs, drafts, rosters, concessions, sponsors, rules, coaches, clinics, the
coordination of all the various playing levels, and a myriad of other details that must be handled
for the baseball season to occur. All of the members are volunteers. They receive no pay for
their time and in fact have to pay the same player fees and fund-raising dues as all other
participants. They are stretched way too thin, but without their efforts there would be no
program. Before you hunt down a coach or coordinator to complain about fields, uniforms
or fund-raisers ask yourself exactly what you have done to advance the program. Paying
your fees gets your child the opportunity to play ball. The quality of that experience is up
to you, far more than the baseball committee. For all its flaws, this program is much healthier
than is was just a few years ago. The committee would like to see that direction maintained,
rather than a return to a very grim past. That is where you come in. To make substantive
changes is an existing program typically takes several years. The current committee will be
gone by then. If you want to have a quality program for your children as they advance up
through the divisions you need to be involved now, not wait until you discover the program
isn’t going the direction you’d like. Early involvement means you get to help shape the direction
of the program.
There are several specific areas the committee has identified in which the program must advance
if our player development is going to compete with similar communities. As a group we must
provide better opportunity for the younger players to develop. There are certain concrete needs
if our teams are to compete successfully. We have to develop better pitchers. We have to
develop more consistent hitters. We’d like to establish a year-round hitting facility where our
kids can work on their batting. We’d like to establish a pitcher-development program where
prospective pitchers can occasionally work with an official pitching coach during the off-season.
We would like to do these things, but none of it is going to happen if we can’t find the parental
involvement and energy to carry out the plans.
The baseball program suffers from a chronic lack of participation from parents. You need to
decide how important this program is to you and you children. This is your chance to step up
and ensure that the program is strong now and in the future. We are having meetings the second
Tuesday of each month from 6:00 to 8:00 at the CYS office to discuss the remainder of this year and
establish the groundwork for next season and the direction of the program. All are welcome to
come and participate. If you are unable to make the meetings but would still like to contribute
call Brian Vinson @ 503-917-9050. The future of the program rests in your hands.
